This is a direct tradition from the marriage of Jacob & Leah, the former of whom was tricked when the latter was switched by her father, under cover of a *heavy veil*. Nowadays, the veil is brought in to where the bride, the groom, the rabbi & the witnesses are gathered. The rabbi specifically asks both the bride & the groom, "Is this the person you are going to marry" & "Do you want to marry him/her." Yes, it's a formality today, but there used to be a time when people were forced to marry.
